Highland & Gaelic Society Under New Management
18 March 2004

NEW COMMITTEE

For those of you who couldn’t make it to last night’s AGM, we’ve got a new Committee for the Society. I’m the secretary and, for those who don’t know me, I’ve been with the Society for a few years now and also run a couple of others.

ENCAMPMENT

There will be an encampment this year, taking place a week this Saturday. We’ll have a couple of workshops on culturally-related themes (more details later) then preparation for and doing of Battle with the Imperial Russian Army and maybe a couple of other groups. Then we’ll be eating, drinking, telling lies, etc, etc. A couple of the longer-term members have an unsettled duel or two to settle in entertaining ways which is always interesting.

We’ll leave town on Saturday afternoon and return hopefully for lunch on Sunday. You’ll need stuff to eat with and off and anything you want to wear and sleep under. We've got a brew of mead we put down a few months ago and you’ll probably want to bring something of your own.

Cost: $25 — cheaper if you have your own transport and cheaper still if you can put someone else in it. I think we can make it cheaper — if it’s significantly so there'll be a refund, if not there’ll be whisky.

We’ll need definite numbers and some money by Thursday 25th at the latest. Contact me if you can make it.

SCOTS WHA HAE!!

Gregor, HiSoc Secretary

Encampment Cancelled due to lack of numbers
9 March 2004

There will not be a Highland & Gaelic Society encampment this weekend; we have not succeeded in attracting enough people’s interest. Refunds available on request.

I realize that this disappointing result may be due to too many people being busy at that particular time, and I therefore invite our members to suggest another weekend when a campout may be more convenient.

I’d also like to remind people that the Highland & Gaelic Society runs on member interest. I’m not the Society all by myself. What do our members want to do as a group this year? Talk to me, people.

Irish Music Monday recommences — sort of
25 January 2004

Yes, it’s true; Half Legendary Men will once again be playing Irish music on Monday nights. But there are a couple of changes from the old format.
  1. It’s in Dicey O’Reilly’s, not the Albert, about 8pm till 10.
  2. They’re not doing a stage performance, it’s an informal affair around a table with one microphone. I guess if it gets more popular they’ll expand. Hint, hint.
